"This is not working" introduces judgment: remember there are no wrong moves in improv. "What can we do to complement this scene" supports our fellow improvisers.
Openings generate wants as well as themes. This is not something I'd really considered before. I love the secret wants exercise, where both improvisers go into a scene with a secret want already picked before hand, because they create really dynamic scenes that start in the middle of the action. I've struggled with how to integrate the idea of going into a scene with a want already in mind when I'm in the middle of a show, on stage. If I can think of wants being generated in openings, maybe that can help me introduce wants earlier in scenes.
Don't panic. If you find yourself at a loss, observe your scene partner - we're always endowing with our body language.
